The capital and commercial center of Barbados, Bridgetown is a busy city and major tourist destination
on the island. There is so much to do here, that you may find yourself overwhelmed trying to decide
how to split your time. Begin with a historic walking tour of the town, which you can do either self-
guided or with a knowledgeable local, then get in some shopping.
Bridgetown serves as a principal centre of commercial activity in Barbados, as well as a central hub for
the island's public transport system. Many of the ministries and departments of the island's government
are located within the Greater Bridgetown area. The Public Buildings or parliament, which stand at the
heart of the city directly north of Heroes Square, house the third oldest continuous parliament in the
British Commonwealth. Indeed, at one point in the city's early history, Bridgetown was the most
important city of all British possessions in the New World due to the city's easterly location in the
Caribbean region.
Diving
Most people who come to Barbados to dive head to Bridgetown first. Perhaps because of the ease of
access through the harbor, but the town's waters have merits beyond that including a 360 foot freighter
wreck called the Stavonikita which is known as one of the most impressive wrecks sites in the region.
Even though Bridgetown is a bustling city, one of the most popular activities for tourists is diving. Just of
the coast of the city, divers will be able to find wrecks and other sites that are perfect place to explore.
You'll find 4 dive operators and at least 12 good dive sites in the area.
Fishing
With larger sportsfish populating the area just offshore Bridgetown, anglers visiting the city will have no
problem finding a charter to take them to a fishing spot.
Fishing is popular in this area, as indicated by the presence of 7 charter fishing services that operate
from this area.
Bike and Scooter Rental
If you feel comfortable winding down busy roads, renitng a scooter or bike while in Bridgetown is for
you. Exploring the city this way lets you spread out faster and see even more landmarks and attractions.
